What’s So Hard About Blogging Anyway?

What’s So Hard About Blogging Anyway?

Newspaper article about blogs.Yea you think it is easy don’t you? It sure looks easy when it is someone else doing it.

Sort of like building a house. A master carpenter and crew and put up a really great house in a couple of weeks if they want to do it quick. And it actually is well built.

But it isn’t that easy if you don’t know what you are doing.

It is the same with just about anything. It takes time to learn everything you need to know to do it well.

And even then it isn’t always easy. For me the hardest thing about blogging is coming up with something to write about.

I could just write about my house or whatever is going on with my family but I’m afraid some family members might get ticked off and never speak to me again.

Besides that I mostly don’t think what goes on around here would be all that interesting to other people. Or at least I’m not a good enough writer yet to make it interesting.

So I started doing reviews. Those are pretty easy once you have an item or book. You just have to tell what you like about the item or book.

I really want to start doing more posts that are not reviews though. Which means I have to figure out what to write about. I’m not sure why but this is incredibly hard for me.

Once I have a subject I seem to be able to come up with something. It may not be good but it is better than nothing. At least I hope it is better than nothing.

If you are a blogger who has the same problem you should check out the Because Prompts Are Fun weekly prompt and linkup over on Tales From The Nursery. You may find the prompts as helpful as I did!

What about you? Are you a blogger? Do you write at all? How do you come up with ideas for what to write about?

Starting The New Year Off Late

Starting The New Year Off Late

New Year 2013.

Yep the New Year is barely started and I’m already procrastinating.

I would love to blame it all on my hubby. After all if he hadn’t hurt his back I would been able to get a lot more done.

I don’t know why but when he is hanging out at home I just don’t seem to get much of anything done. Not housework. Not blogging. Not organizing. The animals are lucky they still get fed.

He doesn’t really get in the way all that much most of the time. He mostly hangs out in the recliner or the bed (when his back was really hurting). But somehow or another when he is home I just can’t seem to concentrate.

Of course it isn’t all him. The housework doesn’t need concentration. There are lots of things to be done that being interrupted wouldn’t hurt…but I haven’t done some of those either.

I did manage to get some dishes washed but only got the fridge cleaned out this morning so now there are MORE dishes waiting.

This doesn’t bode well. If things continue like this I might get all the winter stuff done by summer, and then the summer stuff will be done by winter, and this years goals met by next year…

How are you doing so far this year?

Linkworth For Bloggers

Linkworth is a marketing company that has several different programs that bloggers can use to monetize their blogs. It is also the only one that I have actually gotten paid by(actually sending me the money). So far anyway.

The company requires that you have your own domain name and not be hosted on a free platform such as Blogger or WordPress.com.

You can sell space for banner ads of all sizes including the header banners that many bloggers place just under the header on their blogs and the popular 125 x 125 buttons that you see just about everywhere.

They have several different ways of selling text links. One of them is the LinkMura where several different links rotate. Another is to sell specific keywords that are in your content.

They also have the PPC ads that are connected to words in your content. When a reader mouses over the words a pop up ad appears and you make money every time a reader clicks on the ad.

You can sell full page ads called bulletin boards but I haven’t actually seen one of those yet.

You can also get some sponsored posts to do if you want.

What I like about Linkworth is that you have several different options all in one place and all of them could help you make some money with your blog. You can choose which ones you want to do. If you change your mind later you can just change your preferences in your set up.

And once you get it set up you don’t really have to do anything else if you don’t want to. You can set it up with their plug in so everything is done automatically.

If you do that be sure you go through and choose what kinds of ads you don’t want-I blocked all ads that had anything to do with gambling, dating sites, and adult sites.

Their support people are really great too. They answer you fast and are very helpful.

What I don’t much like about Linkworth is that their site takes some getting used to. It isn’t easy to figure out where everything is and how it works.

It is worth the trouble though. I have made some money each month since I signed up with them. And if you use paypal the payout is only $25 so you get paid quicker. If you prefer checks or direct deposit you can do those as well but the payout level is higher.

I would appreciate it if you use my link if you sign up. If you need any help with the program contact me and I will do my best to help.

The $7.95 Marketing Plan By Jim F. Kukral Review

The $7.95 Marketing Plan By Jim F. Kukral Review

The $7.95 Marketing PlanThe $7.95 Marketing Plan has some excellent advice in it. It it not really a marketing plan itself but can help you come up with a really good marketing plan.

The author says that lots of people make marketing a lot harder by not choosing a good domain name for their websites. He says that a really good domain name can do a lot of the marketing for you.

This book contains a lot of examples of domain names that make it harder for people to find you and your business…and thus make it harder to market your wares.

The book also contains a lot of examples of domain names that practically sell the wares by themselves because people are looking for what they sell in the first place. One such example is wefixcars.com owned by an auto repair business.

The book has a section that is all about how to come up with memorable names. There are exercises you can do to help you think of names. There are also  lots of links to websites that can help you choose a domain name and find out if it is available.

If you are thinking of starting a new website this book could be helpful. I have been thinking about starting a new blog and trying to think of names for it. That’s why I wanted to read this book. It did help and I’m glad I read it.

I probably could have found all this information online but it would have taken me a few hours.  For only $2.99 you can get it all in one place. Much easier and quicker.

Content Rules By Anne Handley & C.C. Chapman Review

Content Rules By Anne Handley & C.C. Chapman Review

Content Rules: How to Create Killer Blogs, Podcasts, Videos, Ebooks, Webinars (and More) That Engage Customers and Ignite Your Business

This is an excellent book. It has a great deal of good information that is useful to bloggers.

The authors start of talking about exactly why content is so important.  Then they go on to the questions of what kind of content would be best for you and your fans. And go into how you get or create that content.

They also talk about making videos and doing online seminars and how to write ebooks and white papers. A lot of this information didn’t apply to me…at least not yet. It gave me some ideas for other things to do later on. Writing an ebook doesn’t seem so out of reach now.

Any blogger or website owner looking to improve their content could do a lot worse than read this book.

From the Back Cover :

To market your business, reach new customers, and create long-lasting loyalty, you need one indispensable element: CONTENT.

Whether it’s bite-sized tweets that allow you to forge relationships on Twitter, blog posts that give your readers must-have advice, ebooks or white papers that engage (and don’t bore), videos that share the human side of your company, interactive webinars that deliver a valuable learning experience, or podcasts that can be downloaded and listened to on the fly (and more!) . . . now more than ever, content rules!

Today, you have an unprecedented opportunity to create a treasury of free, easy-to-use, almost infinitely customizable content that tells the story of your product and your business, and positions you as an expert people will want to do business with.

Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman, business writers, speakers, and marketing thought leaders for clients such as The Coca-Cola Company, HBO, and Verizon Fios, show you how to leverage all of today’s tools to create content that truly speaks to your audience. They’ll show you how to:

  • Understand why you are generating content—getting to the meat of your message in practical, commonsense language, and defining the goals of your content strategy
  • Explore ways to integrate searchable words into your content without sounding forced (or sounding like “Frankenspeak”)
  • Write in a way that powerfully communicates your service, product, or message across various Web mediums
  • Create a publishing schedule that allows you to create different kinds and types of content at once

Offering examples of businesses using content effectively across a wide range of industries and fascinating explanations of how you might approach your own content strategy, Content Rules is the essential field guide to creating your story, finding the right balance of humor and humanity in your content, and building a portfolio of value that will keep delivering for the long haul.

Problogger Secrets For Blogging Your Way To A Six-Figure Income Review

Problogger Secrets For Blogging Your Way To A Six-Figure Income Review

ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income By Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett is a pretty good book. I read the second edition which came out in 2010 according to the publishers page. I thought some of the information might be outdated because things change so fast on the internet but from what I can tell it is still just as good advice as it ever was.

Of course since both of the authors have been professional bloggers for a while now they do tend to talk about some things that are too advanced for me (for now anyway) such as buying and selling blogs. But who knows I might get there eventually and it if so it will be good to know where to find information about doing that!

The book contains lots of information for newbies too. One chapter is all about setting up a blog. Another is about writing a blog. There are chapters about income and earning strategies, promotion and marketing, social media and blogging, and secrets of successful blogs.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn about  making money from blogging. A lot of this information can be found online of course. The authors have a lot of it on the blogs they write for such as  Problogger, Copyblogger, and chrisg.com.

I like having books myself. You can grab a book and read through it even when the internet is down. And you don’t have to wait for a site to load. You can find this book at many libraries too…my local one has a copy. So you have no excuse not to check it out!

Darren Rowse on Twitter and Facebook.  Chris Garrett  on Twitter and Facebook.
