Witch Littles: Magic In The Garden By Laurie Lamson Review

Witch Littles: Magic In The Garden by Laurie Lamson is a fun childrens book. It is about two little girls who come up with their own form of magic and try their best to help their mom.

In the meantime they also help a crab who is scared to come out of his shell and find out how to make a magic potion and a magic wand.

They have lots of fun and get upset with each other and make up…and eventually their mom does end up happier.

It isn’t REALLY about witches…in case you didn’t figure that out. It was fun to read…I expect most kids would like it…little girls especially. Particularly if they have grumpy moms.  :) Of course I’m sure that wouldn’t apply to any of the moms who read my site…

About the book :

What if little girls could make magic in their own backyards?

Intention+belief+love = magical resultsTo help their grumpy mother, Two sisters invent ‘do-it-yourself’ magic and discover we could all use a little encouragement to grow and blossom, just like the plants in their mother’s garden.

About the Author:

Laurie Lamson is a writer, book editor and medical intuitive who has believed in magic ever since she was a little witch herself. Many of her projects have a magic realism aspect, including an upcoming novella and short story collection. She has written or rewritten five screenplays for independent movie producers. She also edited
several writing exercise anthologies in the Now Write! series (Tarcher/Penguin). Visit jazzymaemedia.com to learn more or send a message to laurie@jazzymae.com.

Wicked Jack Adapted by Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge and Illustrated by Will Hillenbrand Review

Wicked Jack Adapted by Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge and Illustrated by Will Hillenbrand Review

Wicked Jack Adapted by Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge and Illustreated by Will Hillenbrand cover picture.

Wicked Jack adapted by Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand is a wicked good book! It is a beautiful hardback childrens book with a dust cover.

The story is adapted from 3 different folk tales.

It is a story of a man so mean that even the devil didn’t want him. I really liked the part where the devil tells him he isn’t welcome in hell and gave him a coal to make his own hell.

The illustrations are wonderful! I especially liked the dark swampy pictures at the front and the back of the book. The artist’s note at the end of the book says that one of the things he used to do the illustrations was a smudge of coal from his jack-o’-lantern which I thought was way cool.

The book is very well made and would probably last through several generations if taken care of. It would be a great Halloween story for young kids.  The book is recommended for children 4 – 8.

From the front cover flap :

Wicked Jack is meaner than a rattlesnake.  One day, Saint Peter visits him in the Great Dismal Swamp, and Jack is nicer than usual.  To reward him, Saint Peter grants him three wishes.  True to his nature, Jack comes up with three mean things: that his rocking chair will keep a -rocking once someone sits in it, that anybody touching his sledgehammer will stick to it like glue, and that whoever falls into the firebush in front of Jack”s shop will get stuck in the middle. What happens when Jack uses his wishes on two small devils, and finally the Devil himself, resuts in Jack’s being turned away at the gates of both Heaven and Hell. To this day, he’s still wandering around Dismal Swamp with a lump of coal.  Some say this explains the origin of jack-o-lanterns.

About the Author (from the back flap) :

Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge has had several stories published in Cricket Magazine and Highlights for Children. She received an M.A. in Education and an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Chicago. She and her husband live with their four children in Richmond, Indiana. Wicked Jack is her first picture book.

About the Illustrator (from the back flap) :

Will Hillenbrand has illustrated a number of picture books, including The Treasure Chest: A Chinese Tale and Asher and the Capmakers: A Hanukkah Story. He lives with his wife and son in Terrace Park, Ohio.

You can “like” Connie’s page on Facebook or follow @CNWUpdate on Twitter. For more information about the illustrator visit Will Hillenbrand on his website.

StinkyKids And The Runaway Scissors by Britt Menzies Review

StinkyKids And The Runaway Scissors by Britt Menzies Review

StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors is a wonderful book. It tells the story of what happens when a kid doesn’t tell her parents about a problem and tries to solve it herself. She learns a valuable lesson!

This is a really well made book as well. It is hardback and has a dust cover. Even with some rough handling by several kids it should last a few years…maybe even a couple of generations if you are into passing things down.

This book also won the 2011 Silver Mom’s Choice Award® for best children’s picture book. The dust cover of the book I received has the silver mom’s choice award stamp on it. The Mom’s Choice is a prestigious awards program that recognizes authors, inventors, companies, parents and others for their efforts in creating quality family-friendly media, products and services. To learn more about them visit the Mom’s Choice Awards website.

The second book StinkyKids See a Full Moon is available for preorder now. If you are going to be in the New York area on Saturday September 10th you will have the opportunity to purchase the book and have it signed by the Author! Be at FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue (767 FifthAvenue -58th Street) at 1 Pm. Britt Menzies will be visiting for a meet and greet and will host story time featuring the new book. This would be a great excuse for a trip to the city!

stinkykids jen dollThe StinkyKids are so cute! They have dolls as well as the book but I only received a book for review. The pictures of the dolls are very cute though. You can see them all on the StinkyKids website.  And they are available for purchase at Amazon.com or Target.com.

StinkyKids donate a percentage of profits to Books, Bears and Bonnets, Inc., a charity founded in honor of the Authors aunt who died from uterine cancer. You can also become a fan on their Facebook page. Or follow them on Twitter.

StinkyKids The Musical will be coming out in early 2012 as well. It will be produced by Vital Theatre Company, Inc. a prominent family musical producer. The show will be for entire families to enjoy together.

The author is a Mom herself who was inspired to create the StinkyKids when her daughter requested to be painted as a ballerina.  The brand has a fresh approach that is fun and unique and teaches life lessons through their products featuring the 10  characters. The characters learn to make right choices through their mistakes and live by the motto “Always Be A Leader Of Good.”

I really liked this book. My grand-kids are not around right now so I couldn’t show it to them but I’m sure they would like it.  It is a wonderful book. The best part for you guys is that I’m going to be giving away this copy during the upcoming Blogmania event! It is a signed copy.

I received the book free  for this review and it has only been handled enough for me to read it. I received no compensation for this review other than the book. Although if she would like to give me a doll I’d take it :p
