Life And Death Behind The Brick And Razor By Isaac Alexis, MD

Life and Death cover.
I learned quite a bit from this book. Dr. Alexis talks about many medical problems and how they are handled in prison.
I didn’t understand a lot of the medical stuff, but I understood enough to know that many if not most people in prison are not considered worth the cost of health care. Or at least not anything remotely expensive.
He quotes a lot of statistics that show that the U.S. has more people in prison that than other countries, most are from lower socioeconomic classes, and that young black males make up a much larger percentage of the prison population, than the general population. Pretty much proving that judges/juries are more inclined to sentence them to prison than men of other races.

We need to find more ways, or more effective ways, to help folks out before they get to that point. Prison should not be the first resort.

Not an easy read, but worth it.

Book Description:

A prison doctor offers insights into the system’s “Correctional Medicine”

Dr. Isaac Alexis’ newly-released book Life and Death Behind the Brick and Razor: Code Red Diamond tells of his varied experiences as a physician in correctional medical facilities while at the same time urges teenagers to make better decisions to avoid the perils of incarceration.

Dr. Isaac Alexis brings the fast-paced, high-pressure reality of correctional medicine to readers in his new book. He discusses health problems that inmates face during incarceration and offers detailed descriptions of medical complications that plague many people inside and outside of prison. He also speaks directly to young people about avoiding gangs and drug addiction, as well as respecting their bodies in order to preserve their physical and mental health and their freedom. Dr. Alexis’s personal experiences growing up in a tough New York neighborhood act as examples of how young people can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

The desire to help people who do not have access to quality health care drove Dr. Isaac Alexis to focus on correctional medicine. The author also shares how his faith empowers him to advocate for the best medical treatment for the population he works with.

A fascinating and important book, Life and Death Behind the Brick and Razor: Code Red Diamond is a book that should be read by anyone dealing with teenagers and young adults whether in the home, public or educational facilities.

Interview with Dr. Isaac Alexis:

Can you describe your book in 20 words or less?
My book deals with the medical complications that can affect many people both inside and out of prison and also counsels our young people against STD, Drugs and gangs. What do you hope your memoir/reference book will do for your readers?

I would hope my book would encourage young people to make positive choices avoiding STD’s, gangs, and drugs.
What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?
The hardest thing about writing my book was revealing my cousin who died of a drug overdose but I did it to show that all our choices in life have a consequence. The easiest thing about writing this book is knowing that as a Physician how can I possibly be silent when people can benefit from leading healthy lives.
What is the funniest (or strangest, or scariest) incident that has ever happened to you?
The funniest thing that happened to me was when my daughter was 6 months old she would crawl on the floor like up at me with those adorable little baby eyes and then when I was not looking she would proceed to bite my leg with all her might making me jump as high as Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls.
Can you share with us some of the people you admire the most?
People I admire most one of whom is a deity is 1) Jesus, 2) Mother-legendary work ethic, 3) Wife,  4) Children,  5) Dr. Benjamin Carson,  6) Dr. Keith Black, 7) Dr. Alexa Canady, and 8) Dr. Leonidis Berry.

21 Days To Happiness By Ingrid Kelada

21 Days to Happiness by Ingrid Kelada. This book has some wonderful tips for becoming happier. Each one is backed up by lots of information from research, and each includes links to where you can find more information if you want to.

My favorite tip was to get enough sleep. I have been working on that one for a long time, way before reading this book. Because I do NOT function well at all if I don’t get enough sleep. I like winter because I can go to bed at 7:30 or so and get up early and I sleep really well. Summer is harder because of the days being longer.

Some of the other tips are to be grateful, to laugh more, to get outside more, to be kind, to eat properly, manage your time, and have good relationships. Each has several different things you can do. she recommends picking two or three to start with.

That time management thing is a really good one. Gave me some more ideas for how to get everything done, that really NEEDS to get done.

I liked this book and I am going to try a few of the things that I wasn’t already doing. There were a few ideas to help with the things I was already doing.

If you want to be happier, read this book, practice at least a few of the tips, and in a few weeks you will be a happier person.

Got to actually do the things. Just reading might help some, but it won’t help much.

 About the book:

Psychologist and happiness expert Ingrid Kelada provides a practical, step-by-step guide to help you increase your personal happiness and feel more motivated. You can learn how with simple 10-minute strategies. Each day of the 21-day journey focuses on one key area of your life, including:

Are You Getting Enough Fiber?

OmniGreen Labs Dietary Fiber.Sometimes it is hard to get enough fiber in your diet. Especially when you are not eating at set meal times. I have had that problem lately.

If you are grabbing whatever you can get from fast food places or convenience stores, then you may not be getting enough fiber.

Even if you are eating regular meals at home it isn’t always easy to get enough fiber.

Without fiber your digestive system doesn’t work nearly as well as it should, and if that goes on long enough you can end up with some serious problems. Lack of fiber is one of the contributing causes of colon cancer. So it is an important part of a good diet.

Adding fiber to your diet is easy with this Fiber Powder from OmniGreen Labs. It even comes with a little scoop so you can easily get the right dosage.

Each serving has 4 grams of Fiber. If you are not used to having fiber in your diet you should probably start off with a small dose and work your way up to the full recommended dosage of two servings a day.

This powder completely dissolves in a glass of water.

Water with a dose of OmniGreen Labs Fiber Powder in it.It has no taste that I can detect and it doesn’t thicken the water. You can add the fiber to any drink you want to put it in. Or add it to your food. Take it however you want to.

This product has no preservatives, chemicals, artificial colors, or flavors in it. It is made in an FDA approved c-GMP Certified Facility.

The package is not fancy, just a fairly plain white jar.

The fiber has helped my digestive system.  I have had a problem with regularity the last few months and that has gotten much better since I started adding the fiber to my diet.  It should continue to improve as my system gets used to the addition.

I like this fiber. It is easy to use.

Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil Review

Picture of a bottle of Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil.Essential Oils are wonderful. Lavender Essential Oil is my favorite. The scent is relaxing, and the oil is used in massage and aromatherapy.

You can put some on your dryer balls, or on a rag, to make your laundry smell wonderful. It is especially nice to use when drying your sheets and pillow cases, because Lavender can help you relax and fall asleep easier.

Putting a drop on a cotton ball and stuffing that in your pillow case can help the scent last longer too.

You can use this oil in your bath too. It is supposed to help with skin problems such as eczema and acne, as well as aching muscles.

The oil can be used in diffusers or oil burners for aroma therapy. It is great in foot soaks too.

This Bulgarian Essential Oil from First Botany Cosmeceuticals is a large 4 oz bottle and it comes with a glass dropper. That makes it really easy to use.

I like the scent of this oil, it smells pretty much like the other Lavender Oil I have used, but I don’t have a clue how to tell if it is as natural and pure as the label says it is. I have used it on my dryer balls and the laundry does smell nice afterward.

I really like the dropper that came with it, and I’m gonna keep that even after this oil is gone.

Take A Deep Breath

Now take another deep breath. Do you know how wonderful it is to be able to do that?

Breathing is amazing. Most of the time it happens without you even paying attention. You don’t have to think about it. You can just go diddy bopping along, and not worry about it at all.

And you don’t worry about it. Or even think about it. Till you can’t do it. Then it becomes the most important thing in your world, and it is really hard to pay attention to other things.

Most of the time I’m fine, and only have a problem if I try to walk too fast or something.

The last few days though with all this rain, the humidity is high, and that seems to make it worse. Just breathing is work. Doing anything else doesn’t seem worth it.

Right now I’m on Advair which helps a lot. So long as the insurance covers it. If the insurance stops covering it like they did the Dulera that I was taking before, then I’m pretty much screwed.

Anyone without insurance or a lot of money is in that situation, because all of those medicines seem to be hugely expensive.

So just take the time to stop and breath every now and then. Maybe smell some flowers, or coffee, and just appreciate how blessed you are.

Bench my father made out of a log.

Be Sure To Clean Between Your Teeth

Our Dentist has a sign in his office that says “You don’t need to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep“.

I can tell you from experience that it is true. Most of the cavities I have had were between my teeth. Because I never did like to floss, and it is so easy to forget.

Gurin Professional Rechargeable Water Flosser. The Professional Rechargeable Water Flosser from Gurin has a made a difference. This thing is fun to use.

It has three different modes: Normal, Soft, and Pulse.

Normal is too strong for me, and I recommend you set it to soft the first time you use it. I didn’t even think about that before I turned it on the first time and it actually hurt a little bit. I have sensitive teeth so most of you guys might be fine with the strong. I mostly use the soft setting.

Rechargeable water flosser.

I also made a mess. I ended up with water all over the counters.

After that it was actually fun. Much better than regular floss, and it does get the bits and pieces out from in between your teeth too. And gives your gums a bit of a massage.

There is a big water tank on it that is easy to fill, and it is rechargeable. It comes with the recharging cord, so when necessary just plug it in for a while.

It comes with two nozzles so more than one person can use it. The instructions say to replace the nozzles every 6 months.

I like using this flosser and expect my dentist to be happier with me the next time I see him.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil Can Help Clear A Stuffy Nose

Bottle of eucalyptus oil from Up Nature.Put a couple of drops of this Eucalyptus Essential Oil from Up Nature in a pot of boiling water, and inhale the steam. Your stuffy nose will start to clear up pretty quick.

It may take a bit longer if it is really bad. You can put the oil in a diffuser too, and it will help a bit, but not as much as the steam.

It can help some if you put a bit on cloth and sniff it too. Or put some on a cloth under your pillow case at night, to help keep your nose clear while you sleep.

The smell is wonderful too. It can help lift your mood.

Diluted oil can be applied directly to the skin, and is often used in soaps and lotions.

It is supposed to be very helpful in repelling ticks if mixed with lemon extract. I’m gonna try that come spring. We are overrun with ticks here in NE Arkansas. If that keeps even a few of them off it will be worth it.

Eucalyptus oil also has some antiseptic properties and makes a good mouthwash.

According to WebMD more research is needed to find out just how useful it can be for things like Arthritis, Asthma, and headaches.

Just be very careful not to use it undiluted on your skin or by mouth.

It does work great for stuffy noses. I have been using it for that the past week. And it makes the house smell good.  Mixing it with peppermint oil really helps.

I like this oil.

Wrists Hurting After Using The Keyboard?

Keyboard Pad and Mouse Pad.A Keyboard Pad and a Mouse Pad can help keep your wrists from hurting if you are on the computer a lot. This one from CushionCare is really nice.

I have been using these for almost a month now. I love them both.

They have a no skid back on them so they don’t slide around.

The cushion holds your wrist up where it should be, so my hands don’t get as tired as they used to, and my wrists don’t hurt as much.

They can still hurt some especially if I am on the computer playing a game for hours. If I’m just typing a post or scrolling on social sites for a bit my wrists don’t hurt at all now.

These look nice too.

The keyboard pad and mouse pad on my desk. The wrist rest attached to the mouse pad is a great idea. If you move your mouse pad the wrist pad goes with it.

The last one I tried was separate and kept falling off the desk. This one will not fall off, unless the whole thing comes down, which has not happened yet.

I like this set of wrist pads. They work.

Need Your Coffee To Stay Hot On The Way To Work?

Insulated Water Bottle from Futurespace Tech. This stainless steel insulated water bottle from Futurepace Tech will keep your coffee hot for up to 8 hours. Of course it will work just as well for any hot beverage, if you are one of those strange folks who like to drink hot tea.

I’m from the south so much more into iced tea. This water bottle can handle that too. It will keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours.

I love this water bottle. It is pretty, and it is also the best quality water bottle I have ever had. It is really nice.

It feels good when you are holding it.

My hand holding my insulated water bottle from Futurspace Tech. And of course you look good when you are drinking from it. Some of us more or less than others.

Selfie of me drinking from the Futurespace Tech bottle.I never tried to take a selfie while taking a drink before. It isn’t easy. And my hair was a mess. The bottle does look good though don’t it?

I have carried it around for more than a week now. It has gotten bumped on the counters, knocked into the floorboard of the car, and forgotten. I did eventually go looking for it. The water was still cold when I found it a few hours later. I have not left it out to see if it actually stays cold for 24 hours but I see no reason to think it won’t.

It has not dripped, or leaked, or sweat on me yet either. I did mention that I love this bottle right?

It is made of food grade stainless steel, and has two layers. The lid is BPA free and the bottle does not have a plastic lining.

It is sold on Amazon.com and you can buy it on the U.S. website or the U.K. website and has a 100% money back guarantee.

Good Cocoa Makes Great Fudge

Ultra Dark Cocoa from FineNaturals.I love fudge. I don’t care if I need it or not, I still love fudge.

Ultra Dark Cocoa Powder from FineNaturals makes some really great fudge. It does matter what other ingredients you put in (organic butter and milk is best- just saying), but having some really good cocoa to go with other good ingredients does make a difference.

This cocoa powder makes some good chocolate milk too. Or hot chocolate. I’m looking forward to using it for hot chocolate this winter.

Dark Chocolate Cocoa Powder from FineNaturals.

I haven’t used it for baking yet, but it should be great for chocolate cakes, or brownies too. I’m thinking about making a fudge cake for Thanksgiving this year, and I have the best cocoa for it already.

FineNaturals says that this cocoa is made from Criollo, which is the rarest and richest variety of cocoa, and was sourced from plants grown at high altitude, which makes it even better.

The company says the cocoa powder is non-GMO, gluten free, and vegan friendly.

It does taste really wonderful, and I am loving it.

I did have to take the powder out of the original package. It is supposed to be resealable, but I could not get it to seal up again, so I put it over in a a container with a lid.

I received a free or discounted product to review.
