The Fraternity Of The Soul Eater By Scott A. Lerner Review

The Fraternity of the Soul Eater cover. The Fraternity of the Soul Eater by Scott A. Lerner was a quick and very amusing read.

Even when they are getting whooped on Sam and his friend Bob, have a weird sense of humor, that just won’t let them stop making smart remarks.

I would love to have that kind of moxie when the crap hits the fan.

This book isn’t just funny, it has some mystery, and a bit of horror, and even some adventure.

It is a stand alone book, but you will probably want to read the other books in the series too, if you haven’t already. I liked the last book (you can read my review here), and this one was just as good. Maybe even better.

About the book:

It’s been a while since Samuel Roberts was called upon to save mankind, and he’s getting restless. His girlfriend Susan thinks he’s a danger junkie, and he’s worried he has a hero complex. He’s back to his usual small-town lawyerly duties in Champaign-Urbana, handling divorces and helping people beat DUI raps. But then a young fraternity pledge calls. During an initiation ceremony he witnessed the live sacrifice of a young woman, but he had so much alcohol in his system that no one believes him. Except Sam. Lately Egyptian lore has been creeping into his life, his dreams, and his movie preferences, and he’s pretty sure he knows why. Evil is knocking on his door again.

Is the call welcome? Why can’t Sam be satisfied with his comfortable legal practice and gorgeous redheaded girlfriend? Maybe it’s because he knows that, as inadequate as he may feel to the task, he and his friend Bob may be humanity’s only hope against ancient supernatural forces combined with modern genetic engineering. Come hell or high water. Or in this case, the underworld or subterranean pyramids.

The Fraternity of the Soul Eater is the third book in the Samuel Roberts Thriller series, which began with Cocaine Zombies and continued with Ruler of Demons.

Johnnie Come Lately By Kathleen M. Rodgers Review

Johnnie Come Lately by Kathleen Rodgers cover.I really liked Johnnie Come Lately by Kathleen M. Rodgers.  The story pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go till I finished it, and I didn’t want it to end.

I really liked the main character Johnnie. She isn’t perfect, in fact she has a lot of problems. She survived bulimia, and grew up with the mystery of why her mother was always gone, and what happened to her uncle.

At least one of her problems she created herself.

One of the reasons I liked her so much is because she seems so much like me, and folks I know.

She would be a nice neighbor.

Really good read.

About the book:

Would life have been different for Johnnie if she’d been named after a woman rather than her dead uncle? Or if her mama hadn’t been quite so beautiful or flighty? The grandparents who raised her were loving, but they didn’t understand the turmoil roiling within her. And they had so many, many secrets.

Why did her mama leave? Would she ever return? How did her Uncle Johnny really die? Who was her father? Now Johnnie Kitchen is a 43-year-old woman with three beautiful children, two of them grown. She has a handsome, hardworking husband who adores her, and they live in the historic North Texas town of Portion in a charming bungalow. But she never finished college and her only creative outlet is a journal of letters addressed to both the living and the dead. Although she has conquered the bulimia that almost killed her, Johnnie can never let down her guard, lest the old demons return. Or perhaps they never went away to begin with. For Johnnie has secrets of her own, and her worst fear is that the life she’s always wanted–the one where she gets to pursue her own dreams–will never begin.

Not until her ghosts reveal themselves.

The Artisans By Julie Reece Review

The Artisans cover picture. The Artisans by Julie Reece is a excellent young adult mystery/romance with a bit of horror story thrown in. The promotional blurbs call it “dark southern gothic”, which definitely seems to suit.

I really liked Raven and her friends.  They sort of reminded me of my high school friends (some of them anyway).

I did not at all like Gideon at first, but he grew on me a bit, more so after finding out why he has such a bad attitude.

The mystery part was really well done. The book kept my interest all the way though.

I liked it.

About the Book:

They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old Raven Weathersby gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.

To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.

Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad’s drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.

But Raven’s stepdad’s drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she’s ever known out of jail, or worse.

Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries’ clothing line, signing over her creative rights.

Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can’t imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.

But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?

About the Author:

Promo picture of Author Julie Reece.Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.

I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.

Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.

Then I thought I’d write one down…

Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

Diamond Rings Are Deadly Things By Rachelle J. Christensen Review

Cover of Diamond Rings are Deadly Things by Rachelle Christensen.Diamond Rings are Deadly Things by Rachelle J. Christensen is a really good mystery/romance.

It has a great setting. The main character is named Adrielle, and she owns a bridal planning business, along with her business partner, who just started getting wedding dresses to sell to the brides.

The mystery comes in when someone steals some of the wedding dresses and trashes some of the others.  That upset the two business owners (and the brides) of course, and I don’t blame them a bit…trashing the dresses is just plain mean, they didn’t HAVE to do that.

In the end that mystery got solved, along with the mystery of who killed Adrielles best friend (and why), and of course there is a romance in there!

I really liked the wedding decorating tips that are included at the start of each chapter too. They are really cool, and can be used to decorate for any type of party.

About the book:

Adrielle Pyper knows how to plan a wedding, and she is especially good at pleasing bridezillas. But when her biggest client and best friend is murdered just three days before the wedding, Adri’s world falls apart. She moves to the resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho, and starts from scratch. Thanks to Adri’s impeccable taste and unique style, she lands two celebrity clients, and her business seems headed for success–that is, until someone vandalizes the specialty wedding dresses she imported from overseas. The race is on to uncover a secret hidden within the yards of satin and lace before Adri becomes the next victim. With a delightful blend of mystery, toe-curling kisses, humor, and spine-tingling thrills, Diamond Rings are Deadly Things is a romantic suspense novel that will keep you turning pages long into the night.

Cranberry Bluff By Deborah Garner

Cranberry Bluff by Deborah Garner cover.Cranberry Bluff by Deborah Garner is a Cozy Mystery.

It was a fun book to read. I liked the characters except for one (and I’m not telling which). Most of them were oddballs of one sort or another.

I particularly liked the main character, because she is a great deal like me. I think we would be friends if she lived next door (or relatively close). She is a bit OCD and prefers the quiet life.

I loved the inn too. It would be nice to have a place like that. Not sure I would want to do all the cooking myself but everything else would be good.

The story is interesting too. I like it way it took an ordinary everyday happening and turned it to a life changing situation.

Good read!

About the book:

Molly Elliott’s quiet life in Tallahassee, Florida, is disrupted when routine errands land her in the wrong place at the wrong time: the middle of a bank robbery. Accused and cleared of the crime, she flees both media attention and mysterious, threatening notes, to move across the country to Cranberry Cove, where she has inherited her Aunt Maggie’s bed and breakfast on the Northern California coast. Her new beginning is peaceful – that is, until five guests show up at the inn for a weekend, each with a hidden agenda.

Mix together one blushing honeymoon couple, one flamboyant boutique owner, a deadpan traveling salesman, and a charmingly handsome novelist, and there’s more than scones cooking at Cranberry Cottage Bed and Breakfast. As true motives become apparent, will Molly’s past come back to haunt her or will she finally be able to leave it behind?

About the author:

Deborah Garner is an accomplished travel writer with a passion for back roads and secret hideaways. Born and raised in California, she studied in France before returning to the U.S. to attend UCLA. After stints in graduate school and teaching, she attempted to clone herself for decades by founding and running a dance and performing arts center, designing and manufacturing clothing and accessories, and tackling both spreadsheets and display racks for corporate retail management. Her passions include photography, hiking and animal rescue. She speaks five languages, some substantially better than others. She now divides her time between California and Wyoming, dragging one human and two canines along whenever possible.

The Hard Way By Cathi Stoler

Cover of The Hard Way by Cathi Stoler. The Hard Way by Cathi Stoler is a pretty good mystery. The characters are interesting and seem real and this is the third book about these characters so you can look forward to reading more about them.

This particular book is about solving a crime in Las Vegas. In a very fancy casino.

From the description of the casino it is a place many of us would love to visit. Hopefully it is based on a real life one(so we actually CAN visit it). If not…well maybe some rich dude will read this book and go build it.

This is also an easy read that keeps you interested.

About the book:

Private Investigator Helen McCorkendale’s childhood friend, Jimmy Scanlan, has just opened January, the most lavish casino and hotel resort on the Las Vegas Strip. After attending the grand opening, Helen returns to New York and encourages her friend, Laurel Imperiole, Senior Editor at Women Now magazine, to create a get-away contest for readers offering a weekend at the hotel as the grand prize. The winner, Dawn Chapman, a jewelry store employee from Cincinnati, denies entering the contest and initially refuses the trip. Finally persuaded by Laurel to accept, she arrives at the hotel and nearly faints when she passes the hotel’s elite meeting rooms where the International Diamond Dealers Consortium is holding its annual meeting. She insists on returning home immediately.

Suspicious of her behavior, Jimmy visits her suite to encourage her to attend the Saturday afternoon pool party, saying she can leave on his private jet the next day. Later in the afternoon, he finds Chapman’s dead body by the pool. She’s been murdered—an unusual double poisoning by cyanide and diamond dust.

Dawn Chapman was not who she appeared to be, and therein lies a mystery. But to Helen and Laurel, the main task is to take Jimmy Scanlon off the suspect list and clear his name. Will their luck hold? Or will it be a crap shoot, as they roll the dice and do it ‘the hard way,’ going for doubles when the odds are against them. Losing may mean losing their lives.

Ruler Of Demons By Scott A. Lerner Review

Ruler of Demons Cover Picture.Ruler of Demons is a FUN book! The main character has a really cool sense of humor(even if he is a lawyer) and even when he is about to get killed he doesn’t completely lose it.

The book does have it’s dark side but on the whole it is the sort of book you should read when the weather is bad and you need cheering up.

It is a quick read and since the action takes place just before Christmas in the story this is a great time to be reading it!

The mystery part of the story was really well done too. You really don’t know right up till the end exactly how it will go. Every time I thought I had it figured out…some other thing got thrown in to shake things up.

I really liked this book and I’m going to have to get the other book this character was in and read it too. And I’ll be looking forward to more books in the series.

About the book :

Only eleven shopping days till Christmas. And less than a week to save the world.

Three nuns—in Chicago, Paris, and Jerusalem—have been killed in a religious ritual. The choice of victims and the macabre details of their deaths indicate that someone is following a recipe provided on an ancient text—a recipe to unleash the forces of hell on earth. The final sacrifice must occur on the Winter Solstice.

Samuel Roberts, a small-town attorney in Urbana, Illinois, knows a bit about the supernatural, having triumphed at least once over the forces of evil. Thanks to a friend who is aware of Sam’s little known previous efforts on behalf of mankind, Sam is hired by a big Chicago law firm to take on a sensitive case. His mission? Nothing less than halting the impending apocalypse.

Sam and his good buddy Bob travel first to Jerusalem then Paris in a desperate race to save mankind.

Dead Dreams By Emma Right Review

Cover of Dead Dreams by Emma Right.Dead Dreams by Emma Right is a young adult mystery/thriller type book.

The story flows quick and keeps you interested and it doesn’t take long to read.

It is about a young woman who has just moved out on her own and is dreaming of finishing college and becoming an actress.

The only real problem I had with this story is the main character Brie. I’m wondering how on earth a kid with as little sense as she has actually managed to survive high school.

I mean really she gets an apartment she can’t afford (first mistake) so she has to look for a roommate. Now lots of college students do this with no problem at all…but they mostly know the people they move in with and if they don’t know they do at least check them out first.

Does Brie do this? NO! Another mistake. She posts on Craigslist looking for a roommate and pretty much takes the first person who comes up with money.

And this strange girl has a heck of story, which doesn’t hang together very well at all which Brie herself actually notices…but does she pay attention? NO!

I found myself wanting to smack this girl. And wondering how in the world her family could have let her grow up without knowing better than that.

The book ends with a lot of loose ends and questions too…which means of course that we have to wait for the next book to find out what really happened. But on the whole…it is worth the wait. I want to know.

About the book :

Eighteen-year-old Brie O’Mara has so much going for her: a loving family in the sidelines, an heiress for a roommate, and dreams that might just come true. Big dreams–of going to acting school, finishing college and making a name for herself. She is about to be the envy of everyone she knew. What more could she hope for? Except her dreams are about to lead her down the road to nightmares. Nightmares that could turn into a deadly reality.
